It must have been Elmer Bernstein.He made the music for the film.You can find in youtube several pics of the film.

Shit Zepyer, that's an easy one.
It's Sammy Hagar. I've seen videos of the old (movie era) version and when he did his newer stuff with the Wabos, from the Hagar Cabo Wabo stuff.

There were 2 songs titled Heavy Metal from the movie, One was sung by Sammy Hagar and the other was done by the Blue Oyster Cult.

An episode of South Park features the tune too, it plays whenever someone hallucinates and the hallucinations (from snifing Cat urine) are all based on the film, it's pretty funny

Actually the song name was used twice in the movie. One version was called "Heavy Metal" nad done by Sammy Hagar and used during the scene when the Corvette drops out of the sky.
The scond song "Heavy Metal (Takin a ride)" was done by former Eagles member Don Felder and used during the WWII Bomber scene.

You're right. It was Don Felder. I don't why I was thinking blue oytser cult, although they did have a song in the movie.
